Proof of the formula for the totient of a prime
Builds on Euler's totient functionPrime numberGreatest common divisorCoprime integers
Proof
- Let be a prime number. By definition, Euler's totient function is the number of integers with that are coprime to .
- Let be an integer with , and let be the greatest common divisor. It is a positive divisor of .
- Since is prime, its only positive divisors are and . So or .
- If , then , so does not divide . Since divides , , and so .
- If , then . Since , is not coprime to itself.
- By steps 4 and 5, the integers in that are coprime to are exactly .
- Hence .
Idea
A prime has no divisors other than and itself. So every positive integer below shares no factor with , and only itself is left out.
