Proof that every positive integer is a square times a square-free integer
Proof
We take as large as possible.
- Let be a positive integer. Let be the set of positive integers such that divides .
- The set is nonempty, because divides .
- The set is bounded. If , then is a positive divisor of the positive integer , so .
- So is a nonempty finite set, and it has a largest element .
- Write with an integer . Since and , is a positive integer.
- Suppose that is not square-free. Then there is a prime number with . Write with an integer .
- Then , so .
- Since , . This contradicts the choice of as the largest element of .
- So is square-free, and with positive integers and .
Idea
Take the largest square that divides and divide it out. If the quotient still had a factor , a larger square would divide . So the quotient is square-free.
