Proof that Fermat numbers are pairwise coprime
Builds on Fermat numberCoprime integersMathematical inductionDivisibility
Proof
- Let be the Fermat numbers. We first show, by induction on , that .
- For : and .
- Assume for some . Then This completes the induction.
- Now let be natural numbers. We may assume . Then , and is one of the factors .
- Let be a positive common divisor of and . Then divides , by steps 1 and 4.
- So divides . Hence or .
- Every Fermat number is odd, since is even. So , and .
- So the only positive common divisor of and is . That is, and are coprime.
Idea
The product of all earlier Fermat numbers is less than the next one. So a common divisor of two Fermat numbers must divide . Fermat numbers are odd, so that divisor is .
