Difference and functional equations Proof
Proof that geometric solutions come from roots of the characteristic polynomial
Builds on Linear recurrence with constant coefficientsSolution of a linear recurrenceCharacteristic polynomial of a linear recurrence
Proof
- Let have order and coefficients . It is a linear recurrence with constant coefficients. Let for , with .
- By the definition of the characteristic polynomial, .
- For each , since is commutative,
- By the definition of a solution, solves exactly when the left side of step 3 is for every .
- Suppose is a solution. Step 3 with gives . So is a root of .
- Conversely, suppose . Then step 3 gives for every . By step 4, is a solution of .
Idea
Plug into the recurrence. Every term has the common factor , and what remains is exactly . At the factor is , so the recurrence holds for all exactly when .
