Relativity and gravitational theory Definition
Proper time
Definition
Let be Minkowski space with metric of signature , and let be the speed of light. Let be a smooth parametrisation of a timelike world line. The proper time along from to is In an inertial frame, with the world line written as for and velocity , this is
Remarks
Example: for the straight world line with and , . For a straight world line from to , , where is the spacetime interval between and . Non-example: for the spacelike curve the integrand is not real, so proper time is not defined; such curves have a proper length instead. Proper time does not depend on the parametrisation, by the change of variables formula, and it is invariant under Poincaré transformations. Along a null world line the same integral is .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
