Properties of invertible matrices

Builds on Invertible matrixRow equivalenceReduced row echelon form

Statement

Let AA be an nΓ—nn \times n matrix. The following four facts hold.

  1. The matrix AA is invertible if and only if AA is row equivalent to the identity matrix II.
  2. If AA is invertible, then for each vector 𝐛\mathbf b the equation A𝐱=𝐛A\mathbf x = \mathbf b has the solution 𝐱=Aβˆ’1𝐛\mathbf x = A^{-1}\mathbf b.
  3. If AA is invertible, then row reducing the augmented matrix [A∣I][A \mid I] gives its reduced row echelon form [I∣Aβˆ’1][I \mid A^{-1}]. This is a way to compute Aβˆ’1A^{-1}.
  4. If AA and BB are invertible nΓ—nn \times n matrices, then ABAB is invertible and (AB)βˆ’1=Bβˆ’1Aβˆ’1(AB)^{-1} = B^{-1}A^{-1}.

Remarks

Fact 2 follows by multiplying both sides of A𝐱=𝐛A\mathbf x = \mathbf b on the left by Aβˆ’1A^{-1}.

Fact 4 is checked by the product (AB)(Bβˆ’1Aβˆ’1)=I(AB)(B^{-1}A^{-1}) = I.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
