Property (T)
Builds on Compact space
Definition
Let be a locally compact group, and let be a unitary representation of on a Hilbert space . For a compact set and , a unit vector is -invariant if for all . A vector is invariant if for all . The group has property (T) if there exist a compact set and with the following property. Every unitary representation of with a -invariant unit vector has a nonzero invariant vector.
Remarks
Example: every compact group has property (T), with and . If for all , then for all . The average over the normalised Haar measure is invariant, and , so .
Non-example: does not have property (T). Here compact sets are finite. In the regular representation on , let . Then , which is small on any finite when is large. But a nonzero vector of invariant under all shifts would have constant coordinates and infinite norm.
Equivalently, the trivial representation is an isolated point of the unitary dual of in the Fell topology. For a discrete group, can be taken finite, and a discrete group with property (T) is finitely generated. The groups and have property (T) for , but not for .

- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
