Remarks
Let be a metric space and let mean , with . Clauses 1 to 4 follow directly. For clause 5, suppose that is not near , so the distance between them is positive. Let . Then is not near , and each point of is at distance more than from , so is not near . The relation that makes all pairs of subsets near fails clause 2, since it makes near .
