Definition

Let ๐’œ\mathcal{A} be an abelian category and let AA be an object of ๐’œ\mathcal{A}. Consider the morphisms with codomain AA. Two such morphisms xโ€‰โฃ:Xโ†’Ax \colon X \to A and yโ€‰โฃ:Yโ†’Ay \colon Y \to A are equivalent, written xโˆผyx \sim y, if there are an object ZZ and epimorphisms uโ€‰โฃ:Zโ†’Xu \colon Z \to X and vโ€‰โฃ:Zโ†’Yv \colon Z \to Y with xโˆ˜u=yโˆ˜vx \circ u = y \circ v. This is an equivalence relation. A pseudo-element of AA is an equivalence class for โˆผ\sim; one writes xโˆˆpAx \in_p A. For a morphism fโ€‰โฃ:Aโ†’Bf \colon A \to B and xโˆˆpAx \in_p A, the pseudo-element f(x)โˆˆpBf(x) \in_p B is the class of fโˆ˜xf \circ x. The zero pseudo-element of AA is the class of a zero morphism 0โ†’A0 \to A.

Remarks

Transitivity of โˆผ\sim uses that pullbacks of epimorphisms are epimorphisms in an abelian category. A morphism xx is equivalent to a zero morphism exactly when x=0x = 0. The basic rules are these. A morphism fโ€‰โฃ:Aโ†’Bf \colon A \to B is a monomorphism if and only if f(x)=0f(x) = 0 implies x=0x = 0. It is an epimorphism if and only if every yโˆˆpBy \in_p B is f(x)f(x) for some xโˆˆpAx \in_p A. A sequence Aโ†’fBโ†’gCA \xrightarrow{f} B \xrightarrow{g} C is exact if and only if gโˆ˜f=0g \circ f = 0 and every yโˆˆpBy \in_p B with g(y)=0g(y) = 0 is f(x)f(x) for some xโˆˆpAx \in_p A.

Example: in the category of abelian groups, let x,yโ€‰โฃ:โ„คโ†’โ„คx, y \colon \Z \to \Z be x(n)=nx(n) = n and y(n)=โˆ’ny(n) = -n. Take Z=โ„คZ = \Z, u=idโกu = \id and v=yv = y, both epimorphisms; then xโˆ˜u=yโˆ˜vx \circ u = y \circ v, so xโˆผyx \sim y. More generally, two morphisms into an abelian group AA are equivalent exactly when they have the same image, so the pseudo-elements of AA correspond to the subgroups of AA.

Non-example: the morphisms x(n)=nx(n) = n and w(n)=2nw(n) = 2n from โ„ค\Z to โ„ค\Z are not equivalent. If xโˆ˜u=wโˆ˜vx \circ u = w \circ v with u,vu, v epimorphisms, then xx and ww have the same image, but these images are โ„ค\Z and 2โ„ค2\Z.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
