Definition

Let Σ\Sigma be a finite alphabet. The complexity class PSPACE is PSPACE=⋃k∈ℕDSPACE(nk),\mathrm{PSPACE} = \bigcup_{k \in \N} \mathrm{DSPACE}(n^k), where DSPACE\mathrm{DSPACE} is defined through the space complexity of deterministic Turing machines. So a language L⊆Σ∗L \subseteq \Sigma^* lies in PSPACE when the following holds for some kk. Some deterministic Turing machine decides LL using O(nk)O(n^k) work-tape cells on inputs of length nn.

Remarks

Example: the set of propositional tautologies lies in PSPACE. For a formula φ\varphi with nn variables, a machine runs through all 2n2^n assignments, keeping only the current one, and evaluates φ\varphi at each. The space used is polynomial in the length of φ\varphi, though the time may be exponential.

Non-example: a machine that stores a table with one entry for each of the 2n2^n assignments uses exponential space. It does not show that its language lies in PSPACE.

One has P⊆NP⊆PSPACE\mathrm{P} \subseteq \mathrm{NP} \subseteq \mathrm{PSPACE}, where P is the class P and NP is the class NP. A machine with polynomial space has at most exponentially many configurations, so PSPACE lies in exponential time. By Savitch's theorem, PSPACE also equals the class NPSPACE defined with nondeterministic machines.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
