Pushforward measure

Definition

Let (X,Σ)(X, \Sigma) and (Y,𝒯)(Y, \mathcal{T}) be measurable spaces, let μ\mu be a measure on (X,Σ)(X, \Sigma), and let f ⁣:X→Yf \colon X \to Y be a measurable function. The pushforward of μ\mu along ff is the map f∗μ ⁣:𝒯→[0,∞]f_* \mu \colon \mathcal{T} \to [0, \infty] given by (f∗μ)(B)=μ(f−1(B))for B∈𝒯.(f_* \mu)(B) = \mu\big(f^{-1}(B)\big) \quad \text{for } B \in \mathcal{T}.

Remarks

The set f−1(B)f^{-1}(B) lies in Σ\Sigma because ff is measurable, so the formula makes sense. The map f∗μf_* \mu is a measure: f−1(∅)=∅f^{-1}(\varnothing) = \varnothing, and the preimage of a disjoint union of sets BnB_n is the disjoint union of the sets f−1(Bn)f^{-1}(B_n). Other notations are μ∘f−1\mu \circ f^{-1} and f#μf_\# \mu. Example: let μ\mu be the measure on ℝ\R with μ(A)=\mu(A) = number of points of A∩{−1,1}A \cap \set{-1, 1}, and f(x)=x2f(x) = x^2. Then f∗μf_* \mu gives mass 22 to the point 11, since f−1({1})={−1,1}f^{-1}(\set{1}) = \set{-1, 1}. Non-example: if ff is not measurable, some f−1(B)f^{-1}(B) is outside Σ\Sigma, and the formula does not define f∗μf_* \mu on all of 𝒯\mathcal{T}. For a measurable g ⁣:Y→[0,∞]g \colon Y \to [0, \infty] the change of variables formula holds: ∫Yg d(f∗μ)=∫X(g∘f) dμ.\int_Y g \, d(f_* \mu) = \int_X (g \circ f) \, d\mu.
