Definition

A quadratic field is an algebraic number field KK with degree [K:ℚ]=2[K : \Q] = 2.

Remarks

Every quadratic field is ℚ(d)={a+bd:a,b∈ℚ}\Q(\sqrt{d}) = \set{a + b\sqrt{d} : a, b \in \Q} for exactly one square-free integer dd with d≠0,1d \ne 0, 1. It is called real if d>0d > 0 and imaginary if d<0d < 0. Example: ℚ(2)\Q(\sqrt{2}); the element 2\sqrt{2} is a root of the irreducible polynomial x2−2x^2 - 2, so 1,21, \sqrt{2} is a basis and the degree is 22. Non-example: ℚ(23)\Q(\sqrt[3]{2}) has degree 33, because x3−2x^3 - 2 is irreducible over ℚ\Q; so it is a number field but not a quadratic field. The ring of integers of ℚ(d)\Q(\sqrt{d}) is ℤ[(1+d)/2]\Z[(1 + \sqrt{d})/2] if d≡1(mod4)d \equiv 1 \pmod 4, and ℤ[d]\Z[\sqrt{d}] if d≡2d \equiv 2 or 3(mod4)3 \pmod 4. The discriminant is dd in the first case and 4d4d in the second.
