Nonassociative rings and algebras Definition
Quadratic Jordan algebra
Definition
Let be a commutative ring with unit, and let be a module over with an element . Let , , be a quadratic map: for , and is bilinear. For put , and let be the map . The triple is a quadratic Jordan algebra if for all :
- ;
- ;
- ;
- clauses 1 to 3 also hold after extending scalars to , for every commutative -algebra with unit.
Remarks
Example: a unital associative -algebra with . Then , and clause 1 holds since . Clause 3: . Clause 2: both and equal . Clause 4 holds because is again associative.
Non-example: any with for all fails clause 1.
If , a unital Jordan algebra gives a quadratic Jordan algebra with . Conversely, the product recovers the Jordan algebra, so the two notions agree. Clause 3 is called the fundamental formula.
