Definition
Let be a signature and let be an -theory. The theory has quantifier elimination if, for every -formula , there is a quantifier-free -formula such that
Remarks
For sentences () one allows the quantifier-free sentences and when has no constant symbols. It suffices to treat formulas of the form with a conjunction of atomic and negated atomic formulas.
Example: the theory of dense linear orders without endpoints, in the signature , has quantifier elimination. For instance, is equivalent to by density, and is equivalent to since there is no greatest element.
Non-example: the theory of , without the order symbol, does not have quantifier elimination. The formula defines , which is infinite and co-infinite. A quantifier-free formula in is a Boolean combination of polynomial equations , so it defines a finite or cofinite subset of . With the order symbol added, the theory has quantifier elimination; this is Tarski's theorem.
