Quantum complexity class BQP
Builds on Quantum Turing machineComplexity class
Definition
Let be a language. The language is in BQP if there are a quantum Turing machine and a polynomial with these properties.
- On every input , the machine halts after at most steps, and its output is then measured.
- If , the measurement gives with probability at least .
- If , the measurement gives with probability at most .
The amplitudes of are required to be efficiently computable complex numbers.
Remarks
An equivalent definition uses uniform families of quantum circuits. A language is in BQP exactly when some classical polynomial-time algorithm does the following. On input it outputs a quantum circuit of polynomial size that decides on inputs of length with error at most .
Example: every language in P is in BQP. A reversible version of a deterministic polynomial-time computation can be run on a quantum machine, and it gives the right answer with probability .
Non-example: if in clause 2 one only asks for probability greater than , with no gap from , one gets the class PP, which contains BQP. With bounded error, repeating and taking the majority makes the error exponentially small, which is why can be replaced by any constant below .
Known inclusions are .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
