Definition
Let be a finite-dimensional complex Hilbert space. A quantum code in is a linear subspace ; let be the orthogonal projection onto . Let be a quantum channel on the operators of , the noise. The code corrects if some quantum channel satisfies for every density operator on with . Here acts on the operators of , and it is called a recovery. Quantum error correction is the design and use of codes and recoveries that correct given kinds of noise.
Remarks
Example: let , , and let with and , where flips qubit . The four subspaces and are orthogonal. The recovery measures which of them contains the state, which reveals but nothing about the encoded state, and then applies . So corrects .
Non-example: the same code does not correct the noise , where acts on qubit . Let ; then swaps and . So sends both states to the same mixed state, and no recovery can return both.
A code that corrects also corrects every channel whose Kraus operators are linear combinations of those of . This is why correcting finitely many errors corrects a continuum of them.
