Definition

Quantum field theory in curved spacetime is quantum field theory on a fixed, classical, curved spacetime that is not affected by the quantum fields. Its basic model, the free real scalar field, is defined as follows. Let (M,g)(M, g) be a globally hyperbolic, time-oriented Lorentzian manifold of dimension 44, let m≥0m \ge 0 and ξ∈ℝ\xi \in \R, and let RR be the scalar curvature of gg. Let P=□g+m2+ξRP = \square_g + m^2 + \xi R be the Klein–Gordon operator of gg, with □g\square_g the d'Alembert operator of gg. Let E=E−−E+E = E^- - E^+ be the causal propagator, the difference of the advanced and retarded fundamental solutions of PP. The field algebra is the unital ∗*-algebra generated by symbols ϕ(f)\phi(f), for f∈Cc∞(M)f \in C_c^\infty(M) complex-valued, subject to the following relations, for all f,h∈Cc∞(M)f, h \in C_c^\infty(M) and a,b∈ℂa, b \in \C.

  1. Linearity: ϕ(af+bh)=aϕ(f)+bϕ(h)\phi(af + bh) = a\phi(f) + b\phi(h).
  2. Hermiticity: ϕ(f)∗=ϕ(fˉ)\phi(f)^* = \phi(\bar f).
  3. Field equation: ϕ(Pf)=0\phi(Pf) = 0.
  4. Commutation relation: [ϕ(f),ϕ(h)]=iE(f,h) 1[\phi(f), \phi(h)] = i E(f, h)\, 1, where E(f,h)=∫Mf (Eh) dvolgE(f, h) = \int_M f\, (Eh)\, d\mathrm{vol}_g.

A state of the theory is a positive normalized linear functional on this algebra.

Remarks

Sign conventions for □g\square_g and for EE differ between authors. Example: for M=ℝ1,3M = \R^{1,3} with the Minkowski metric, the relations hold for the usual free field ϕ(f)=∫ϕ(x)f(x) d4x\phi(f) = \int \phi(x) f(x)\, d^4x of mass mm on Fock space, with the Minkowski vacuum as a state. Non-example: let (M,g)(M, g) be not globally hyperbolic, for instance with closed timelike curves. Then PP need not have unique advanced and retarded fundamental solutions, and clause 4 is not defined. The physically accepted states are the Hadamard states, whose two-point functions have the same short-distance singularity as the Minkowski vacuum. The choice ξ=1/6\xi = 1/6 with m=0m = 0 gives the conformally coupled field.
