Definition
Let be a modular tensor category. An example is the category of tilting representations of the quantum group at a root of unity , modulo negligible morphisms. The Reshetikhin–Turaev functor of assigns a number to each framed link in whose components are colored by objects of .
The quantum invariant of a closed oriented 3-manifold is obtained as follows.
- Present by integral Dehn surgery on a framed link with components.
- Color each component of by the Kirby color , and evaluate by linearity. Here is the quantum dimension, and the sum runs over the isomorphism classes of simple objects .
- Multiply by a normalising factor that depends only on , on and on the signature of the linking matrix of .
The normalising factor is chosen so that the result does not change under the Kirby moves, and hence depends only on .
Remarks
Let come from with . Then the evaluation in step 2 is a combination of colored Jones polynomials of , and is the Witten–Reshetikhin–Turaev invariant at level . Suitably normalised, the invariant is multiplicative under connected sum. Step 3 is needed: the links and the -framed unknot both present , while their colored evaluations differ in general. Normalisation conventions differ between authors.
