Definition

Fix a constant ℏ>0\hbar > 0, the reduced Planck constant. A quantum-mechanical system is a pair (ℋ,H)(\mathcal{H}, H), where ℋ\mathcal{H} is a separable complex Hilbert space and HH is a self-adjoint operator on ℋ\mathcal{H}, the Hamiltonian. It is read through the Dirac–von Neumann axioms:

  1. the states of the system are the density operators on ℋ\mathcal{H};
  2. the measurable quantities are the observables, the self-adjoint operators on ℋ\mathcal{H};
  3. a state ρ\rho at time 00 becomes U(t)ρ U(t)∗U(t) \rho\, U(t)^* at time tt, where U(t)=e−itH/ℏU(t) = e^{-itH/\hbar} is a unitary operator.

Quantum mechanics is the theory of such systems.

Remarks

Example: take ℋ=ℂ2\mathcal{H} = \C^2 and H=diag(E0,E1)H = \mathrm{diag}(E_0, E_1) with real E0,E1E_0, E_1. Then HH is self-adjoint, and U(t)=diag(e−iE0t/ℏ,e−iE1t/ℏ)U(t) = \mathrm{diag}(e^{-iE_0 t/\hbar}, e^{-iE_1 t/\hbar}) is unitary, so (ℂ2,H)(\C^2, H) is a quantum-mechanical system, a two-level system.

Non-example: on ℂ2\C^2, the matrix H=iIH = iI is not self-adjoint. Then e−itH/ℏ=et/ℏIe^{-itH/\hbar} = e^{t/\hbar} I is not unitary, and it does not keep the trace of a density operator equal to 11.

When the state is pure and given by a unit vector ψ\psi, clause 3 becomes ψ(t)=U(t)ψ\psi(t) = U(t)\psi, the solution of the abstract Schrödinger equation iℏ ψ′(t)=Hψ(t)i\hbar\, \psi'(t) = H\psi(t) for ψ∈D(H)\psi \in D(H).
