Definition
Let and be complex Hilbert spaces, and let denote the trace class operators on . A quantum operation from to is a linear map such that:
- is completely positive: for every , the map on sends positive operators to positive operators;
- does not increase the trace: for every positive .
For a density operator with , the number is the probability that the process occurs, and the output state is .
Remarks
Example: for a projection on , the map is a quantum operation. It is completely positive since for , and for . Non-example: the transpose map on preserves positivity and the trace, but clause 1 fails for . Indeed, applied to with , it gives the swap operator, which has the eigenvalue . In finite dimensions every quantum operation has the Kraus form with .
