Definition
Let be the complex Hilbert space of a quantum system. A quantum state of the system is a density operator on . The state is pure when is an orthogonal projection of rank , that is, for all , for some unit vector . Here is conjugate-linear in the first argument and linear in the second.
Remarks
The unit vector of a pure state is unique up to a factor with . So the pure states correspond one to one to the points of the projective Hilbert space of , and one often calls itself the state, or the state vector.
A density operator is pure if and only if , if and only if .
Example: on with , the state is . It is positive with trace , and , so it is a pure state.
Non-example: the identity on is positive, but its trace is , so it is not a state. Its multiple is a state, but not a pure one, since .
