Definition
Let be the complex Hilbert space of a quantum system, and let be unit vectors of , state vectors of pure quantum states. A superposition of is a unit vector of the form a linear combination with complex coefficients . The superposition principle says that every such unit vector is the state vector of a pure state of the system.
Remarks
Every nonzero linear combination gives a superposition . If are orthonormal, the condition reads .
Example: in with orthonormal basis , the vector has norm , so it is a superposition of and . The vector has the same moduli of coefficients, but it is orthogonal to , so it is a different state.
Non-example: the mixed state is not a superposition of and . It is not of the form for any unit vector , since its square is , not itself.
