Quasicrystal
Definition
Let and let be a set of points. is a quasicrystal (in the mathematical sense) if the following hold.
- is uniformly discrete: there is with for all distinct .
- is relatively dense: there is such that every closed ball of radius meets .
- has pure point diffraction: the autocorrelation measure exists, and its Fourier transform , the diffraction measure, is a pure point measure.
- is not crystallographic: there is no Bravais lattice with .
Here is the ball of radius centred at , and the limit is in the vague topology of measures. A set with clauses 1 and 2 is a Delone set.
Remarks
The definition is not uniform in the literature. The International Union of Crystallography calls a crystal any solid with an essentially discrete diffraction diagram, and a quasicrystal one that is moreover aperiodic. Some authors also require finite local complexity.
Example: the vertex set of a Penrose tiling is a Delone set, since the tiles are two rhombi of fixed size. It is a model set (a cut-and-project set from ), so its diffraction is pure point, and it has no period, because the tiling is aperiodic. Its diffraction pattern has ten-fold rotational symmetry.
Non-example: satisfies clauses 1 to 3, with diffraction supported on , but it fails clause 4 with .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
