Quaternions and spatial rotation

Summary

Unit quaternions describe rotations of three-dimensional space. A unit quaternion qq acts on a vector vv, viewed as a pure quaternion, by v↦qvqˉv \mapsto q v \bar q, and this map is a rotation. The quaternion cos⁡(θ/2)+sin⁡(θ/2)(u1i+u2j+u3k)\cos(\theta/2) + \sin(\theta/2)(u_1 i + u_2 j + u_3 k) gives the rotation by θ\theta about the unit axis uu, and qq and −q-q give the same rotation. This description avoids the gimbal lock of Euler angles and is used in mechanics, robotics, computer graphics and spacecraft attitude control.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
