Quaternions and spatial rotation

Definition

Let ℍ\mathbb{H} be the quaternions, with conjugation q↦qˉq \mapsto \bar q and norm ∣q∣=qqˉ\abs{q} = \sqrt{q \bar q}. Identify ℝ3\R^3 with the pure quaternions by (v1,v2,v3)↦v1i+v2j+v3k(v_1, v_2, v_3) \mapsto v_1 i + v_2 j + v_3 k. A unit quaternion is a q∈ℍq \in \mathbb{H} with ∣q∣=1\abs{q} = 1. The rotation associated with a unit quaternion qq is the map Rq ⁣:ℝ3→ℝ3,Rq(v)=q v qˉ.R_q \colon \R^3 \to \R^3, \qquad R_q(v) = q\, v\, \bar q.

Remarks

For each unit quaternion qq, the map RqR_q is an element of the special orthogonal group SO(3)SO(3). If q=cos⁡(θ/2)+sin⁡(θ/2)(u1i+u2j+u3k)q = \cos(\theta/2) + \sin(\theta/2)(u_1 i + u_2 j + u_3 k) with (u1,u2,u3)(u_1, u_2, u_3) a unit vector, then RqR_q is the rotation by θ\theta about the axis ℝu\R u. One has Rpq=Rp∘RqR_{pq} = R_p \circ R_q, and the map q↦Rqq \mapsto R_q from the unit quaternions onto SO(3)SO(3) is a surjective group homomorphism with kernel {1,−1}\set{1, -1}.

Example: q=(1+k)/2q = (1 + k)/\sqrt{2} has ∣q∣=1\abs{q} = 1 and qˉ=(1−k)/2\bar q = (1 - k)/\sqrt{2}. Then Rq(i)=12(1+k) i (1−k)=12(i+j)(1−k)=12(i+j+j−i)=jR_q(i) = \tfrac12 (1 + k)\, i\, (1 - k) = \tfrac12 (i + j)(1 - k) = \tfrac12 (i + j + j - i) = j, and Rq(k)=kR_q(k) = k. So RqR_q is the quarter turn about the zz-axis, as the formula with θ=π/2\theta = \pi/2 predicts.

Non-example: q=2q = 2 is not a unit quaternion, and v↦qvqˉ=4vv \mapsto q v \bar q = 4 v is a scaling, not a rotation. For any nonzero qq the map v↦qvq−1v \mapsto q v q^{-1} equals Rq/∣q∣R_{q / \abs{q}}, so one may also use non-unit quaternions in that form.
