Definition

Let GG be a topological group and let HH be a subgroup of GG. Let G/H={gH:g∈G}G/H = \set{gH : g \in G} be the set of left cosets of HH, and let π ⁣:G→G/H\pi \colon G \to G/H, π(g)=gH\pi(g) = gH. The quotient of GG by HH is the set G/HG/H with the quotient topology of π\pi. So a set U⊆G/HU \subseteq G/H is open if and only if π−1(U)\pi^{-1}(U) is open in GG. If HH is a normal subgroup, then G/HG/H is also given the structure of the quotient group.

Remarks

The projection π\pi is continuous and an open map: for UU open in GG, the set π−1(π(U))=UH\pi^{-1}(\pi(U)) = UH is a union of the open sets UhUh. If HH is normal, then G/HG/H is a topological group, and π\pi is a continuous homomorphism. The space G/HG/H is Hausdorff if and only if HH is closed in GG. Example: ℝ/ℤ\R/\Z is a compact Hausdorff topological group, isomorphic to the circle group through x+ℤ↦e2πixx + \Z \mapsto e^{2\pi i x}. Non-example of the Hausdorff property: ℝ/ℚ\R/\Q carries the indiscrete topology, because ℚ\Q is dense, so every nonempty open set of ℝ\R meets every coset of ℚ\Q.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
