Definition
Let be a set with a binary operation . The pair is a rack if:
- for all .
- For all there is exactly one with .
A rack is a quandle if moreover:
- for all .
Remarks
Clause 2 says that for each the map is a bijection of , and clause 1 says that this bijection is an automorphism of .
Example: the conjugation quandle of a group , with , the conjugate of by . Clause 1: both sides equal , since . Clause 2: is the only solution. Clause 3: .
Example: the dihedral quandle on , with . Both sides of clause 1 equal , clause 2 has the solution , and .
Non-example: a rack that is not a quandle. Let be a permutation of other than the identity, and let . Both sides of clause 1 equal , and clause 2 holds since is a bijection. But for each moved by , so clause 3 fails.
Some authors write the operation on the other side, with .

- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
