Radical of a module
Definition
Let be a ring and let be a left module over . A maximal submodule of is a submodule such that no submodule lies strictly between and . The radical of , written , is the intersection of all maximal submodules of . If has no maximal submodule, then .
Remarks
Example: let as a -module. Its maximal submodules are and , so , which has elements.
Non-example of a proper radical: the -module has no maximal submodule, because every quotient with is divisible and so is not simple. So .
For as a left module over itself, is the Jacobson radical . Equivalently, is the intersection of the kernels of all module homomorphisms from to simple modules. For every one has , with equality when is left Artinian.
