Definition
Let be a probability space and let be integers. Let be or , and give the space of matrices the Borel -algebra of . A random matrix is a measurable map .
Remarks
Equivalently, where each entry is a random variable on the same space . The law of is the probability measure on . Example: let be an matrix whose entries are independent standard normal random variables, and let . Each entry of is a sum of measurable functions, so is a random symmetric matrix; it is a Wigner matrix with Gaussian entries. Non-example: random variables defined on different probability spaces do not form a random matrix, because the entries need one common probability space.
