Definition
Let be a commutative ring and let be a finitely generated projective -module. For a prime ideal of , the localization is a finitely generated projective module over the local ring . So it is free of some finite rank . The rank of is the function , . The module has constant rank if for every prime .
Remarks
The rank is locally constant on the spectrum with its Zariski topology. It is additive, , and multiplicative for tensor products. For an integral domain with field of fractions , the rank is constant and equals .
Example: has constant rank , since .
Non-example of constant rank: let and . The spectrum has two points, and . At , and has rank ; at , has rank .
