Definition
Let be an abelian group, written additively. A subset is linearly independent if for all distinct and integers , The rank of is the cardinality of a maximal linearly independent subset of . It does not depend on the choice of the maximal subset.
Remarks
Example: has rank . The set is independent, and it is maximal: for any , lies in , so gives a relation with nonzero coefficient on .
Non-example of independence: in , the set is not independent, since with coefficient . In fact a group in which every element has finite order, such as the torsion subgroup of any abelian group, has rank .
Equivalently, the rank of is the dimension of the -vector space . Rank is additive: if is exact, then . The free abelian group has rank , and has rank .
