Definition
Let be a topological space. A rate function on is a function that is lower semicontinuous. Equivalently, for every , the sublevel set is closed. A rate function is good if every sublevel set , for , is compact.
Remarks
Example: on is a good rate function. It is continuous, so lower semicontinuous, and is compact.
Example: on , let for , with , and otherwise. It is a good rate function, the one for fair coin tossing in CramΓ©r's theorem.
Non-example: on , let and for . Then is not closed, so is not lower semicontinuous.
Non-example of goodness: on is a rate function, but is not compact.
In a large deviation principle, the rate function is unique when is a regular topological space, for example a metric space. A good rate function attains its infimum on every non-empty closed set.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
