Definition
Let be a field and let be a scheme over , for example an algebraic variety over . A -rational point of is a morphism of -schemes . The set of -rational points is written .
Remarks
If is the affine variety defined by polynomials , then is the set of with . If is defined by homogeneous polynomials, then is the set of points with all , not all zero, at which the polynomials vanish. Equivalently, when is of finite type over , a -rational point is a closed point of whose residue field is .
Example: for , since .
Non-example: satisfies , but it is not a -rational point, because . In fact has no -rational point: clearing denominators gives in integers with , and reducing modulo forces to divide , and then .
