Definition
Let be a field and let be an integral algebraic variety over of dimension . The variety is rational over if it is birationally equivalent to the projective space . This means that there is a birational map .
Remarks
Equivalently, the function field is purely transcendental over : it is isomorphic to for elements of transcendence degree . Example: the conic in is rational. The map sends into , since . Its inverse is the projection from the point of . Non-example: the conic in is not rational over . It has no real points, while a variety birational to has a dense set of real points. Over the same conic is rational. So rationality depends on the field .
