Statement

Let MM and Mˉ\bar M be Riemannian manifolds of the same dimension n≥2n \ge 2, and let a>0a > 0. Let γ ⁣:[0,a]→M\gamma \colon [0, a] \to M and γˉ ⁣:[0,a]→Mˉ\bar\gamma \colon [0, a] \to \bar M be unit-speed geodesics. Let JJ along γ\gamma and Jˉ\bar J along γˉ\bar\gamma be Jacobi fields such that J(0)=0,Jˉ(0)=0,⟨J′(0),γ′(0)⟩=⟨Jˉ′(0),γˉ′(0)⟩,∣J′(0)∣=∣Jˉ′(0)∣.J(0) = 0, \quad \bar J(0) = 0, \quad \ip{J'(0)}{\gamma'(0)} = \ip{\bar J'(0)}{\bar\gamma'(0)}, \quad \abs{J'(0)} = \abs{\bar J'(0)}. Assume that:

  1. γˉ\bar\gamma has no point γˉ(t)\bar\gamma(t) with 0<t≤a0 < t \le a conjugate to γˉ(0)\bar\gamma(0).
  2. For every t∈[0,a]t \in [0, a], every 2-plane σ⊂Tγ(t)M\sigma \subset T_{\gamma(t)} M containing γ′(t)\gamma'(t) and every 2-plane σˉ⊂Tγˉ(t)Mˉ\bar\sigma \subset T_{\bar\gamma(t)} \bar M containing γˉ′(t)\bar\gamma'(t), the sectional curvatures satisfy Kˉ(σˉ)≥K(σ)\bar K(\bar\sigma) \ge K(\sigma).

Then ∣Jˉ(t)∣≤∣J(t)∣\abs{\bar J(t)} \le \abs{J(t)} for all t∈[0,a]t \in [0, a].

Remarks

The idea of the proof: for 0<t≤a0 < t \le a, the quantity ⟨Jˉ′,Jˉ⟩/∣Jˉ∣2\ip{\bar J'}{\bar J} / \abs{\bar J}^2 at tt equals the index form of Jˉ\bar J on [0,t][0, t] divided by ∣Jˉ(t)∣2\abs{\bar J(t)}^2. Since γˉ\bar\gamma has no conjugate points, Jˉ\bar J minimizes the index form among fields with the same end values. Transplanting JJ to γˉ\bar\gamma by a linear isometry along the geodesics and using the curvature inequality shows that the logarithmic derivative of ∣J∣\abs{J} is at least that of ∣Jˉ∣\abs{\bar J}. Integration from 00, where the ratio ∣Jˉ(t)∣/∣J(t)∣\abs{\bar J(t)} / \abs{J(t)} tends to 11, gives the inequality.

Example: take Mˉ=ℝn\bar M = \R^n, where Jacobi fields with Jˉ(0)=0\bar J(0) = 0 are Jˉ(t)=tW\bar J(t) = t W for a constant vector WW. If MM has sectional curvature K≤0K \le 0, then ∣J(t)∣≥t∣J′(0)∣\abs{J(t)} \ge t \abs{J'(0)} for normal Jacobi fields, so JJ never vanishes for t>0t > 0 and MM has no conjugate points. This is the key step of the Cartan–Hadamard theorem.

Hypothesis 1 is needed: on the unit sphere, normal Jacobi fields sin⁡(t)E(t)\sin(t) E(t) vanish at t=πt = \pi, and comparisons with the sphere hold only up to that first conjugate point.

For a student

Rauch's theorem is the infinitesimal tool behind much of comparison geometry. Comparing with the space forms of constant curvature gives explicit bounds on Jacobi fields, on conjugate points and on the differential of the exponential map. It is used in the proofs of the Cartan–Hadamard theorem, of Toponogov's triangle comparison theorem and of the sphere theorem.
