Ray parameter
Builds on Seismic ray theory
Definition
Let be a seismic ray in an isotropic medium with wave speed .
- Let depend only on the depth , and let be the angle between the ray and the vertical at depth . The ray parameter of the ray is .
- Let depend only on the distance from the centre of a sphere. Let be the angle between the ray and the radial direction at radius . The ray parameter is .
In both cases does not depend on the point of the ray chosen. In case 1 it has units of time per length, and in case 2 units of time per radian.
Remarks
Equivalently, is the horizontal component of the slowness vector , where is the travel time; in case 2, is the component along the great circle times . If is the travel time from a surface source to a surface receiver at distance , then for the ray that arrives at . Example: in a half-space with , , a ray leaving the surface at angle has . It turns where , that is at the depth with , so . Non-example: if also depends on the horizontal position, changes along a ray, so case 1 does not define a single number for the ray.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
