Mechanics of deformable solids Definition
Rayleigh wave
Definition
Let a homogeneous isotropic linear elastic solid fill the half-space , with density , Lamé parameters , and P-wave and S-wave speeds . A Rayleigh wave is a solution of the elastodynamic equations without body force of the form such that:
- and as ,
- the surface is free of traction, there, and
- is not identically zero.
Such solutions exist exactly when , the unique root in of the Rayleigh equation
Remarks
Example: for a Poisson solid, , one has , and the Rayleigh equation has the root , so . Check: with , both sides equal .
Non-example: a plane S-wave travelling along the surface in direction with vertical polarization does not decay with depth, so clause 1 fails.
The speed does not depend on , so on a homogeneous half-space Rayleigh waves are not dispersive.
