Real functions Classical inequalities Theorem
Rearrangement inequality
Builds on Permutation
Statement
Let and be real numbers, and let be a permutation of . Then
Remarks
Proof idea: suppose but . Swapping the two values changes the sum by . Repeated swaps sort into the identity without decreasing the sum, which gives the upper bound. The lower bound follows by applying the upper bound to .
Example: with and , the sums range from to .
Mathlib states a form as Monovary.sum_smul_comp_perm_le_sum_smul.

For a student
The rearrangement inequality gives quick proofs of several classical inequalities. Averaging it over the cyclic shifts of gives Chebyshev's sum inequality. Applied to suitable sequences it also gives the AM–GM inequality and the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality in special cases.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
