Definition
A scheme is reduced if for every open set the ring is a reduced ring. That is, has no nonzero nilpotent elements.
Remarks
Equivalently, every stalk is a reduced ring. An affine scheme is reduced if and only if is reduced. Example: for a field is reduced, since has no nonzero nilpotents. Indeed, a power of a polynomial lies in only if the polynomial itself is divisible by both and . Non-example: is not reduced, since the class of is nonzero but . Every scheme has a reduced scheme with the same underlying space, obtained by dividing out the nilpotents.
