Definition
Let be a commutative ring, let be an ideal of , and let be a variable, with . The Rees algebra of is the subring of the polynomial ring
Remarks
It is a subring because and , and it is a graded ring with degree part . If is generated by , then is generated as an -algebra by ; so if is Noetherian, then is Noetherian. Example: for , with a field, and , one gets , and and are algebraically independent, so this is a polynomial ring in two variables. Non-example: for a proper ideal , the whole ring is not , because lies in but its coefficient does not lie in . The quotient is the associated graded ring , and the extended Rees algebra is used as well.
