Rees matrix semigroup
Definition
Let be a group, let and be nonempty sets, and let be a matrix with entries in . The Rees matrix semigroup is the set with the product The matrix is called the sandwich matrix.
Remarks
The product is associative: both ways of bracketing give . So is a semigroup. It is simple: given and , one can solve for . Rees's theorem: a semigroup is completely simple if and only if it is isomorphic to some .
Example: if and , then is an isomorphism onto . Example: if is trivial, and , the product is , so for all : a left zero semigroup.
Non-example: the monoid is not isomorphic to any Rees matrix semigroup over a group. It has the proper ideal , while a Rees matrix semigroup has no proper two-sided ideal.
