Refractive index
Builds on Phase velocityPermittivityPermeability
Definition
Let a homogeneous, isotropic, linear medium carry a monochromatic electromagnetic plane wave of angular frequency with phase velocity . Let be the speed of light in vacuum. The refractive index of the medium at frequency is
Remarks
In terms of the relative permittivity and the relative permeability of the medium, . For an absorbing medium, is complex, and one uses the complex index , where governs the decay of the wave. For a non-uniform medium, is the index at each point .
Example: in water, visible light has phase velocity about m/s. Check: .
Non-example: in a birefringent crystal such as calcite, the phase velocity depends on the direction and polarization of the wave. The medium is not isotropic, and a single number does not describe it; one uses two or three principal indices instead.
The index is in vacuum and usually larger than in transparent matter, but occurs, for example for X-rays in many materials.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
