Definition
Let be an algebraically closed field.
- Let be a quasi-affine variety, that is, a nonempty open subset of an affine variety in . A function is regular at if the following holds. There are an open neighbourhood of and polynomials such that has no zero on and on .
- Let be a quasi-projective variety in . A function is regular at if the following holds. There are an open neighbourhood of and homogeneous polynomials of the same degree. The polynomial has no zero on , and on .
In both cases, is regular on if it is regular at every point of .
Remarks
In case 2, is a well-defined function on , because and have the same degree and so . A regular function is continuous when is identified with with its Zariski topology.
Example: on , the function is regular, with and on .
Non-example: the function on given by and for is not regular at . Near it would equal on a nonempty open set, so would vanish on a cofinite set and hence be , which contradicts .
On an affine variety , the ring of regular functions on all of equals the coordinate ring ; this uses Hilbert's Nullstellensatz. On a projective variety, every regular function on the whole variety is constant.
