Definition
Let be a Noetherian local ring with residue field , and let be its Krull dimension. The ring is regular if can be generated by elements. Equivalently, is regular if its embedding dimension equals .
Remarks
A set of generators of in a regular local ring is called a regular system of parameters.
Example: a field is regular, with and . A Noetherian local domain of dimension is regular exactly when is principal, that is, when it is a discrete valuation ring, such as . For a field , the rings and have dimension and maximal ideal generated by the elements , so they are regular.
Non-example: has dimension , but its maximal ideal needs one generator, so it is not regular. The cusp has dimension and embedding dimension , so it is not regular.
