Definition
Let be meromorphic functions near , and consider the linear equation The point is a regular singular point of the equation if:
- is a singular point of the equation, and
- for each , the function is analytic at .
The point is a regular singular point if is one for the equation obtained by the substitution .
Remarks
For , written , condition 2 says that and are analytic at . For , the point is ordinary or regular singular if and only if and are analytic at .
Example: the Cauchy–Euler equation with has and . So is singular, while and are constant; hence is a regular singular point.
Non-example: for , one has , and is not analytic at . So is singular but not regular singular; it is an irregular singular point.
Fuchs proved a characterisation by growth. A singular point is regular singular if and only if every solution grows at most like a power of as in each sector with vertex .
