Regulator of a number field
Builds on Algebraic number fieldDirichlet's unit theoremDeterminantNatural logarithm
Definition
Let be an algebraic number field with ring of integers . Let be the real embeddings of , and let be one embedding from each pair of complex conjugate non-real embeddings. Put for and for , and let . Let be a system of fundamental units, as in Dirichlet's unit theorem. If , the regulator of is This is the absolute value of the determinant of an matrix. The matrix keeps the first of the columns . If , the regulator is .
Remarks
The value does not depend on the choices. Each row of the full matrix sums to , because for a unit ; so deleting another column changes only the sign of the determinant. Another system of fundamental units differs by a matrix in , which has determinant . Here is the natural logarithm.
Example: for , and , so .
Non-example: in , the unit is not fundamental, since it does not generate the units modulo . Using it in the formula gives , which is twice the regulator.
For and for imaginary quadratic fields, and .
