Relative homology
Builds on Singular homologySubspace topology
Definition
Let be a topological space and let be a subspace with the subspace topology. Let be the singular chain complex of . Every singular simplex in is a singular simplex in , so is a subcomplex of . The relative chain complex is the quotient , with the boundary map induced by the boundary of . The relative homology is the homology of in degree .
Remarks
A class in is represented by a relative cycle, a chain with . Two relative cycles give the same class when their difference is with and . For , the group is the singular homology . A map of pairs , that is, a continuous map with , induces maps .
Example: for , and the other relative groups vanish. For , the path in is a relative cycle, since lies in .
Non-example: in with , the same path is not a relative cycle, because its boundary contains the point .
