Relative homotopy group

Definition
Let be a topological space, let be a subspace, let , and let . In the cube , let be the face where the last coordinate is . Let be the closure of . The relative homotopy group is the set of homotopy classes of maps with and . The homotopies must keep these two conditions at every time. For , the sum is defined by the formula for absolute homotopy groups, putting and side by side in the first coordinate.
Remarks
For the sum makes a group, and for the group is abelian. For there is no group structure in general, and is only a pointed set.
Example: when , the conditions say that sends all of to , so .
Example: for , , by the long exact sequence of the pair and the contractibility of the disk .
Non-example: a map with that does not send to is not a representative; the base point condition on is part of the definition.
Equivalently, is the set of homotopy classes of maps of triples .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
