Definition
Let be an algebra, and let be the variety generated by . The algebra is relatively free if, for some subset , it is a free algebra of on via the inclusion map.
Remarks
Equivalently, has a generating set such that every map extends to an endomorphism of . This follows from the fact that a universal property for the class carries over to , by Tarski's formula. Example: the free group on is relatively free, since every map extends to an endomorphism. Example: with is relatively free; it is the free algebra on one generator of the variety of abelian groups satisfying . Non-example: the symmetric group is not relatively free. Every generating set of contains a transposition , since the even permutations form a proper subgroup. A map that sends to an element of order cannot extend to an endomorphism, since would force the image to satisfy .
