Replica trick
Builds on Random variableExpected valueSpin glass
Definition
Let be a positive random variable with and for some . Then where is the expected value. Consider a disordered system, such as a spin glass, with a random Hamiltonian on a configuration space . Let be its partition function. The replica trick is the following procedure.
- For each positive integer , write , a system of replicas with the same disorder.
- Compute for these integers .
- Continue to real near and take .
Remarks
The identity holds because decreases to as , by convexity of , and is bounded by for ; monotone convergence then applies. Step 3 is not justified in general: it exchanges the limits and , and the values of at the integers do not determine its continuation.
Example: let with standard Gaussian. Then , and , as the identity claims.
Non-example: if has a Cauchy law, then for every and , so the hypotheses fail and the formula has no meaning.
In spin glass theory, the order parameter of the replicated system is the overlap matrix . The choice of its form in step 3 is called a replica symmetric or a replica symmetry breaking ansatz.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
